Dixie Laite, Mayor of Dametown

Dixie Laite - Dame Town Writer

It’s both wonderful and challenging to be a woman. But much like the Land of Oz, with heart, brains, courage, and good and bad bitches to lead the way, it can be a hell of a journey. (And yes, kickass shoes and a dog always help.)

I’m Sarah “Dixie” Laite, a not-so-bad bitch, and self-styled the Mayor of DameTown.  I’ve worked for a variety of TV and online brands (Noggin, WE-TV, MTV, Oxygen, TeenNick, MacNeil/Lehrer NewsHour) and magazines (BUST, Martha Stewart’s Whole Living, ATOMIC).  I’ve written advice columns for AMC, scripts, thousands of scripts, and everything from preschool songs for animated Moose A. Moose to articles extoling blowjobs.  I’ve been a mechanical bull operator in South Florida, bodybuilding trainer in Greenwich Village, second-grade teacher in Harlem and the South Bronx, a national teacher trainer for PBS, a Web evangelist” Oprah Winfrey, and an Editorial Director at Oxygen and Nickelodeon. I’ve been profiled in New York Magazine, Apartment Therapy, the New York PostNew York Times and various magazines and websites. Currently a freelance writer, branding consultant and stay-home mom of none, I live in midtown Manhattan with my 2 dogs, 5 parrots, a huge pink octopus chandelier, and my sainted husband.

I remain a hard-boiled feminist, tireless online shopper, bodybuilder, animal lover and vintage movie nerd.  Having diligently studied femorabilia all my life, it’s given me an encyclopedic (and monumentally annoying) knowledge of 20th century pop culture and vintage vixenry. To paraphrase Oscar Wilde, we are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars…like Barbara Stanwyck.

My hope is that Dame Town will combine my twin passions, OG femorabilia and personal development, to explore and inspire. (BTW, I’m way prone to personal TMI, Sorry, not sorry.) I look forward to hanging with you and all my fellow Dame Town denizens!

  • I found you in O the Oprah magazine and immediately fell in love with your style, sass and reallness! if that’s not a word, then i just made another one! Started following you on Instagram and i hope to find your blog! My name is Cyndee and I’m a cosmetology instructor in Garden Grove in California. Just turned 65 and it feels like an explosion happened inside me! I’m living a brand new life in a brand new way! I’ve been sober for 4 1/2 years and single for 5 or so years. Got baptized last year and finding my God that was already there just waiting for me! I love that you say you can “do anything for 10 minutes “ I take that to the gym with me, to my meetings, ( especially when someone is on the pitty pot) and when i need to do something i don’t want to do! Gets me over the hump!
    I’m glad i found you!

    • Cyndee — thank you so much for reaching out! What a blessing to be in O magazine and get to “meet” wonderful women like you! You are such a huge inspiration to me. What do you do at the gym? We older dames need to keep in shape and I do weight-lifting twice a week. I’d like to go back to distance running but my knees and back won’t let me. 🙁 Any advice?

Thanks so much Cyndee for coming to “Dametown”! You are an honored citizen!

  • What a great website! Where have I been that I just stumbled onto this place. Subscribed!

Can anyone suggest a dame name and their story? Does it have to be from Hollywood or the film industry or will stage actresses be ok too?
